Pemberton: camping, hiking & shredding a tire

I really wanted to get one last alpine hike in with Megan so we rallied a few friends and drove up to Birkenhead Lake campground in Pemberton Friday evening. It was a classic camp meal of steak and potatoes but with mexican street corn style corn on the cob. We enjoyed the fire until we realized we may have made a miscalculation with our plans for the next day. The trailhead for our hike, while in Pemberton, was still about 2 hours away. We decided to just accept the extra driving and press on with our plans the next day.

The next morning, the girls started our day with a morning swim. It was super smokey due to nearby fires but strangely beautiful.

After a big breakfast we were off to hike. To get to the trailhead was about an hour down a forest service road – one of the rougher ones I’ve been on but didn’t seem unmanageable. The hike was stunning and was definitely worth the extra drive!

We finished up the hike and headed back to the city. Shortly after reaching the paved road back to Pemberton, my rear tire blew out. And I don’t mean a flat, I mean it was absolutely shredded. May I have been driving too fast in my little Kia Soul on the forest service road that had a warning sign for 4×4 only?? Maybe. But thankfully we had taken two cars so Markus took us back to Vancouver along with my blown out tire to get replaced. Some lessons were learned today, like don’t assume you have a spare as a lot of cars are just coming with the shitty tire repair kits. But we did get Creekbread pizza on our way home so all was good in the world. Steven and I drove back the next day to replace the tire and bring our car back to Vancouver – shout out to Kal Tire who were open on a Sunday and so helpful!
