Norway: day paddle around Reine

Today I kayaked with the kayaking company that’s part of my hotel. It was supposed to be a 2-3 hr tour but it ended up being 4 which was awesome. More guests joined than they expected and they only had one guide so I ended up being the kayaking instructor’s assistant which I actually loved. I think one woman and her mom actually thought I worked there as they asked for a photo with me and the guide at the end of the trip. The wind picked up during the paddle and it became very challenging, the weather changes so quickly here! We ended up having to change our route to work with the wind. I was very happy to be in a single kayak – apparently they usually don’t allow it (doubles are way more stable) but since I had my level 1 Paddle Canada they let me. That also meant I got to wear a drysuit for the first time ever! Super cozy. During the paddle we tried truffle seaweed which was surprisingly really good. After kayaking I sauna’d for a few hours while cold dipping in the ocean. It was nice to have a relaxing afternoon and rest up for another hike tomorrow. I have a kayaking trip in mind I really want to do but it’s just too sketchy here to do it solo, there’s no where to pull off (all rocks), the water is ice cold, the wind can suddenly change and become incredibly strong, and there are changing currents. I’ll need to stick to group kayak trips but that’s all good. I’m finishing the evening at a tiny little pub with live music – this random guy with a ukelele from Alaska!

(just kidding – one day though, retirement goals!)
